“My, my! at Waterloo, Napoleon did surrender. Oh yeah! and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way.”
These famous words were first uttered in 1844 by Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, when, mere moments after his statue was erected on Ingram Street in Glasgow, a drunken reveller scaled his effigy and crowned it with a plastic traffic cone. The reveller in question was promptly executed but Wellington shook his fist in rage at the impertinent cone and declared “I was defeated, you won the war!”. The cone, and the statue which resides beneath it, persist to this day, and are attractively commemorated in this handsome print.
